Friends & Neighbors

Marriage Equality Rhode Island believes that individual images and testimonies are some of the strongest tools we have to win equal marriage. MERI Friends & Neighbors is our initiative to collect photos and statements in support of marriage equality from our constituents and allies. This goes beyond a simple petition: we want to show the real people behind our cause, as part of our mission to move the hearts and minds of our elected representatives and fellow citizens alike.

I believe in Marriage Equality because it is a right for everyone whether or not they want to marry someone of the opposite OR same sex.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I believe in the freedom of rights in our county that seem to be only for a certain population. We should not have our rights to be married voted on and influenced by a religious population that does not have a perfect past through out history. We have the same rights as anyone else, It's time to stand up to these hate groups and take control over our own lives. Marriage Equality can do this with the help of our community. Good Job!

I believe in Marriage Equality because as a gay woman I would love to have the same rights as my brother and sister. I would love to be able to introduce my partner as my wife, as so many of my friends are able to do. I would love to be able to give my partner the wedding of her dreams and have it be legal in our home state that we love.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I am a social work intern at the MET High School, Liberty building in Providence. We have started a GSA in our building and I have at least 2 students that have come forward with an interest to be active in the fight for marriage equality. They suggested going to the White House smile but I thought maybe we could start locally. If there is any way we can be of help to you, I want to let you know that we are willing, just let us know how we can help. We appreciate what you do, thanks for your time Meg

I believe in Marriage Equality because everyone deserves the same rights. It doesn't make sense to even have to write this. It is common sense.

I believe in Marriage Equality because, as the dad of a transgendered teenager, I would like my child to eventually enjoy the social, personal , legal and economic benefits of marriage that I and millions of others have, and that other kids and young adults hope to have. I would like all LGBT kids to look forward to that kind of future for themselves. And I want to be proud to live in a state that endorses and welcomes marriage for all its citizens--straight and LGBT.

I believe in Marriage Equality for lots of reasons: * we have friends that are gay; * it wouldn't be fair not to; * institutions are strengthened by including more participants, not weakened; * we can't think of any _good_ reason to oppose it.

I believe in Marriage Equality because marriage represents a legal and social recognition of two people's commitments to one another; it breaks my heart to see something as inconsequential as gender keep two people who love each other from enjoying that equal recognition. I wanted marriage equality before I began to identify myself as bisexual. It breaks my heart that so many people would do anything to keep gays stigmatized & apart.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I don't see how anyone who has ever loved anyone - regardless of gender or sexual orientation - could stand up against love this genuine. I believe in Marriage Equality because there is absolutely no reason why it should not be the case.
