Marriage Equality Rhode Island believes that individual images and testimonies are some of the strongest tools we have to win equal marriage. MERI Friends & Neighbors is our initiative to collect photos and statements in support of marriage equality from our constituents and allies. This goes beyond a simple petition: we want to show the real people behind our cause, as part of our mission to move the hearts and minds of our elected representatives and fellow citizens alike.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I would like to have all the same rights as the rest of my family

I believe in Marriage Equality because everyone should have the legal right to partnership benefits regardless of the gender of their partner. Everyone should have the right to visit someone they love in the hospital, buy a house together, or receive insurance benefits from a partner. I believe in making gay marriage legal, regardless of opposition, because we are already forming partnerships and getting married and it's time the government caught up.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I want a voice. When it comes to my wife and I, my opinions should matter in the most important moments we share together. I look forward to a day where there is no more seperation, where my wife and I are on equal ground. I don't want to jump through hoops to obtain the freedoms I should have been born with.

I believe in Marriage Equality because love is indefinable. It is not limited by money, social class, age, and certainly not by gender. Love can not be confined. It can not apply to just a certain group. As this is the case, anyone should be allowed to express that love--Especially through marriage. I believe in Marriage Equality because I support not just the love between a man and a woman, but also the love of everyone in between.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I believe that every person should be able to choose their life partner. I believe in equality, so I have to support marriage equality. When any one person in our community has their freedom to live peacefully limited, then we must reconsider the laws governing our community. And really, isn't it just about time? We owe it to ourselves and to our children to codify new forms of tolerance -- isn't that our collective responsibility as citizens?

I believe in Marriage Equality because as a business owner, I know that tolerance is an essential ingredient in the success of my enterprises. I find it surprising that some legislators are reticent about voting for marriage equality. Do they know that voting for marriage equality will add $1.2M to the state’s economy? In a recession, every bit counts! Setting the financial benefit to the state aside for a moment, I’d like to make it even more clear how important marriage equality is to our state. Support for marriage equality is intelligent and timely, will give a boost to Rhode Island ‘s reputation outside of our state, will attract new knowledge economy workers to the state, and more simply put, will be good for Rhode Island businesses. I've enclosed a picture of my family- pro-marriage equality children and fabulous wife, Deb Norman. Thanks for supporting marriage!

I believe in Marriage Equality because I believe in equal rights.

I believe in Marriage Equality because marriage is a sacred and wonderful institution. And that institution is diminished and tarnished when it is not freely available to all who wish to partake of it. Growing up, many children imagine themselves spending the rest of their life with one person in marriage, years before they have any idea what that person will look like or what gender they might happen to be. Ultimately, marriage is a civil institution, and the government has no cause to interfere in a person's desire to marry who they wish. I've been married for six years, and supporting my wife through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer would have been immensely harder without the institution of marriage to strengthen and support our relationship.

I believe in Marriage Equality because NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO SAY WHO YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH.MARRIAGE IS BETWEEN 2 PEOPLE NOT THE STATE OR COUNTRY YOU LIVE IN.
