Marriage Equality Rhode Island believes that individual images and testimonies are some of the strongest tools we have to win equal marriage. MERI Friends & Neighbors is our initiative to collect photos and statements in support of marriage equality from our constituents and allies. This goes beyond a simple petition: we want to show the real people behind our cause, as part of our mission to move the hearts and minds of our elected representatives and fellow citizens alike.

I believe in Marriage Equality because as a clergy person I have worked among the LGBTQQ community for decades, seen many unions that had every hallmark of marriage without the civil benefits, and believe that such marriages are worthy of blessing by the church and full equality under law. Such loving, stable and committed relationships bless their communities of faith and enrich their nations, states, and neighborhoods.

I believe in Marriage Equality because gays can love and raise families just as well as heterosexuals.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I want the family I have someday to have the same rights, privileges, and protections as other families. When I was young, I confused the fact that I was a second class citizen with the thought that I was a second class human. That simply isn't true and I want to fight for a world in which no child ever believes that is the case.

I believe in Marriage Equality because marriage is a commitment that you make to the person you love to support, encourage and love eachother. Love doesn't care what sex a person is and marriage laws should not either. Equal rights in this country should be for everyone and this is one more step in the right direction. I am a heterosexual woman who belives in marriage equality!
