Marriage Equality Rhode Island believes that individual images and testimonies are some of the strongest tools we have to win equal marriage. MERI Friends & Neighbors is our initiative to collect photos and statements in support of marriage equality from our constituents and allies. This goes beyond a simple petition: we want to show the real people behind our cause, as part of our mission to move the hearts and minds of our elected representatives and fellow citizens alike.

I believe in Marriage Equality because love and commitment knows no bounds. What difference does it make what two human beings get married if they love each other and want to solidify their union? Exactly who is this hurting? I grew up with my gay sister, have a gay son who has been in a committed relationship for 5 years and also a gay uncle who was with his partner for MANY years until he sadly lost him to illness a few years ago. I've also had gay friends who've been among some of the best people I've ever met. We are all human beings and each and every one of us deserve the same rights.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I believe in our nation's promise of equality and I embrace our founding affirmation that all Americans are created equal. Can't we get most of our rights through civil unions or domestic partnerships? Can't we settle for something less than full marriage equality and still make progress? I don't think so. Why should we settle for anything less than full and equal right. MARRIAGE EQUALITY NOW.

I believe in Marriage Equality. The "pursuit of happiness" as our Constitution states means having the Right to marry the one I love. For me I love another man, God made me that way so don't question His work and give me the Right to be Happy.

I believe in Marriage Equality because all couples deserve to be recognized equally. Separate is not equal...we've already learned that lesson, so why is history trying to repeat itself?

My partner Ed and I believe in Marriage Equality because we've been together for five years and are tired of saying we're "married" in air quotes. We are deeply committed, tax-paying, home-owning, community-supporting grownups; as such, we deserve the same legal rights and privileges that come as a matter of course to any heterosexual couple. We believe that marriage is a sacred *civic* institution. To legally restrict access to it -- most especially, on religious grounds -- is a fundamental violation of our liberty as citizens.

Marriage itself means equality. Hierarchies do not (nor should not) exist in a true marriage: two people, regardless of background, come together and unify in deepest love. A human being's ability to make this kind of connection stands as one of the most beautiful things we're capable of. One of life's truest joys. It's something that should be celebrated! Not condemned or vilified. Furthermore, when you get down to brass law tacks, no argument exists to keep same-sex marriage illegal that doesn't have its foundation in religion...but the US has its foundation in the separation between church and state. Hateful, hurtful, unconstitutional, unjust: we need positive change now. Marriage is a human right, not a heterosexual privilege. Let RI not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments
