Registering to vote in Rhode Island is an easy process. We’ve outlined the basic rules and regulations, and provided a few helpful links to get you started.

Registration Forms

You may download voter registration forms from the RI Board of Elections website.

Voter Eligibility

You may register to vote if you are a citizen of the United States, a resident of the Rhode Island city or town where you wish to vote, and at least eighteen years old on or before the next election. You may not register to vote if you are legally declared mentally incapable by a court or a convicted felon still serving a sentence. Once a sentence is fully served, the right to vote is restored by either notifying your local board of canvassers in writing or by submitting a new registration form.

Deadline to Register

31 days prior to Election Day. The State of Rhode Island keeps track of upcoming elections and registration deadlines on their website.

Identification Requirements

First-time voters in Rhode Island must present a valid RI driver’s license or state-issued ID, current utility bill, current bank statement, current government check, current paycheck, or another current government document.

Where to Turn in Your Registration

Voter registration applications should be turned in to your local board of canvassers.

How to Register Others

Anyone can register others and mail or turn in their forms on their behalf. You just need to be sure to meet the registration deadline, and that the person you are registering is eligible to vote.

Verification

You should receive written confirmation that your voter registration was processed in 2–3 weeks.  Don’t panic if you don’t receive a voter registration card: you don’t actually need it to vote.  If you not sure if your registration was processed — or if you simply can’t remember if you’re registered to vote — you can check your registration status on the RI Secretary of State’s website.
