Marriage Equality Rhode Island believes that individual images and testimonies are some of the strongest tools we have to win equal marriage. MERI Friends & Neighbors is our initiative to collect photos and statements in support of marriage equality from our constituents and allies. This goes beyond a simple petition: we want to show the real people behind our cause, as part of our mission to move the hearts and minds of our elected representatives and fellow citizens alike.

I believe in Marriage Equality because without it we don't exist as "legitimate couples" in the eyes of the government in and many peoples "minds". Our children are marginalized and we are not represented honestly...

I believe in Marriage Equality because everyone deserves to have a family and everyone's definition of that is different. My family has nothing to do w/ blood, it is my friends that i hold dear to me, my wife and kids. and I work and go to school fulltime so i should have the same legal marriage rites as anyone else.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I want my partner and I to have to rights that every non-gay person has to declare a union recognized by the state. We want to be married and are waiting for the state to realize there is a difference between church and state.

I believe in Marriage Equality because my partner and I will be married for one year come April. Our marriage is fully recognized by our home state of New York, but we had to leave the country in order to get married. We look forward to the day when marriage amendments across the nation are deemed unconstitutional under Federal law.

I believe in Marriage Equality because it's the LAW. Shortly after moving to Providence, I had to undergo cancer treatment. My same-sex partner, a physician living in New London, CT and I received a Massachusetts marriage in 2004 and a Connecticut civil union the following year. Whether or not I could receive continuous healthcare coverage under my partner's plan was the main reason we decided that I needed to move in with him in Connecticut. Marriage rights represent significant economic advantages to which all taxpayers and citizens are entitled — and which would be of clear benefit to all the people of Rhode Island, not just the ones in gender and sexual minorities. I am a CT Justice of the Peace, an ordained minister, ULC, an active local Green Party member, and a three-time finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. I welcome all Rhode Island same-sex couples to contact me to find out more about the rights you may be entitled to by getting married in scenic, historic, fabulous New London, Connecticut.

I believe in Marriage Equality because it's the right thing to do - to provide equal access to civil marriage, as instituted and regulated by the state. I have advocated for equal marriage since the early-to mid-90's as a writer, gay leader, and political advocate. Kudos to the work you are doing. Lee McD

I believe in Marriage Equality! There is no logical or scientific argument that can stand any longer in it's way. It is time to allow LGBTQ(and I) people see that "a life" if possible living true to themselves. It is time for this to happen.

I lived in Rhode Island my whole life, until I was refused the right to marry my wife. It is a beautiful, warm and inviting place to live. I miss the beaches, the farms in North Smithfield, and how diverse each town is. I love my home now in Massachusetts, but we should not have to choose where to live to be recognized as married!!!!!!!!
