Friends & Neighbors

Marriage Equality Rhode Island believes that individual images and testimonies are some of the strongest tools we have to win equal marriage. MERI Friends & Neighbors is our initiative to collect photos and statements in support of marriage equality from our constituents and allies. This goes beyond a simple petition: we want to show the real people behind our cause, as part of our mission to move the hearts and minds of our elected representatives and fellow citizens alike.

I believe in Marriage Equality because all individuals who love each other, and are in a committed relationship, have the right to be happy. The roots of this debate lie in the soil of discrimination. Gays have long been discriminated against, even though there is little difference between sexual orientation-based discrimination and that based on race. Many states and the federal governments still have laws that discriminate against gays. These laws must be struck down to pave the way for a new law. Same-sex marriage should be legalized because discrimination is wrong, and current laws are discriminatory. Legalizing same-sex marriage is important to me because I think that all people regardless of their race, color, creed or sexuality should be treated equally.

I believe in Marriage Equality because it is my fundamental right as an equal citizen of this country entitled to equal treatment under the law. If you agree as science and history does, that being LGB or T is not a choice, then these members of the community deserve the same rights as anyone else. As a gay member of the community I am a strong believer that legalization of same-sex marriage will advance our nation and reinforce that church and state are separate. Stand today for equality

I believe in Marriage Equality because I want my daughter to grow up in a state that allows people who love each other to get married! I love the state of Rhode Island so much, and the fact that we don't have marriage equality puts a big gaping hole in our entire community and culture. Equal rights cannot be ascertained without the right to marry who we chose. I believe that with the hard work MERI is doing and the support that Rhode Islanders are showing every day for this cause, the day for equal marriage rights in RI is coming. I know when my daughter grows up, she will be able to marry whoever she choses in the state we love so much.

I believe in Marriage Equality because Those groups that incite the population to deny equality in marriage rights stand behind statistics that speak to a society that an adult in marriage is more prosperous, mentally healthy and able to provide healthy home environments for children speak for solutions yet participate in hate and go to great lengths to ensure the continued turmoil and unrest in gay populations. The success in Marriage Equality to be measured into the future is the same for every population that has endured painful societal stigma and rights suppression.

I believe in Marriage Equality because, as a Bisexual woman, I want to be able to marry the person I choose, regardless of gender. It's a fundamental human right to choose a life partner. As a society of multiple faiths, we need to set religion aside when applying law.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I believe in the guiding principles that make this country what it is...equal rights for all citizens. There is no debate or argument, no political or personal view, that can negate that most precious of all principles.

I believe in Marriage Equality because I am in love with a woman, and I want to be able to marry her in our home state, with all our family and loved ones present. I believe everyone should have all rights, no matter their sexual orientation. I just want to make a difference.
